The AI agent landscape: who uses which agents, where, why, and with what tools

An agent is software that does something for you rather than only answering: books the table, builds the spreadsheet, fixes the bug, answers the customer. A phone company can count the phones switched on. Nobody counts agents: each company knows its own users and publishes them, if at all, in its own way.

So this page reads what is public and asks three questions of it. Who uses which agents. Where they use them, and why there. And how: which tools they plug in to get the work done.

The short answer. Most people meet agents inside three chat apps that each count about a billion users, mostly on their phones and mostly for life rather than work. Office workers are getting them on the desktop, where the labs have folded their separate agent products. Developers do the most measurable work with them, in the terminal. And the tools agents plug in are, so far, mostly a browser to drive and documents to read.

Who uses what

Six groups of people, each reaching for a different kind of agent. The right-hand column is the strongest public sign for each, from the measures below.

WhoUses whatBest public sign
Everyone with a phoneThe assistant in a chat app, and its agent modes: ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Claude, Copilot, Grok, PerplexityThree apps each report about a billion people; most of what they are asked has nothing to do with work
Office workersDesktop agents that build the document, spreadsheet or deck: Microsoft 365 Copilot, ChatGPT Work, Claude Cowork, ManusMicrosoft sells 30 million paid Copilot seats; searches for Claude Cowork went from none to 368k a month
DevelopersCoding agents in the terminal and editor: Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, Cursor, OpenCode, Cline. Five measures for them39% use Claude Code at work; coding apps send most of the tokens on the one router that publishes them
People who build without codingApp builders: Lovable, Replit, Bolt, v0; automation builders such as n8nLovable is searched 2.7 million times a month, more than Cursor and Copilot together
Tinkerers and power usersAn always-on personal agent they run themselves and text: OpenClaw, Hermes Agent, or Poke if hostedOpenClaw is the most-starred agent on GitHub; Hermes Agent sends more tokens through OpenRouter than any app
Businesses, for their customersAgents that answer the chat, the ticket and the phone: Salesforce Agentforce, Sierra, Decagon, Intercom Fin, Vapi, RetellThe agent works for the company, so the person on the other end rarely knows its name; no public counts

What the companies report

These are the only user counts anyone publishes, and they count the app an agent lives in, not the agent. A billion people opening Gemini is not a billion people letting it act for them. Each company also counts its own way: a week or a month, a deliberate visit or a tap inside WhatsApp.

What those billions ask is mostly personal. OpenAI's own study of consumer ChatGPT found that by June 2025 over 70% of messages had nothing to do with work. Practical guidance, looking things up and writing made up nearly four in five; programming was about 4%.

What people search for

Searches for a product's name are the one measure taken the same way for every agent: worldwide Google searches a month, from Google's own keyword data. The scale is logarithmic, so each step is ten times the last.

* The name is also an everyday word or another thing (a star sign, a first name, a Latin word), so its count runs high. † Retired: ChatGPT agent mode and the Atlas browser were folded into ChatGPT in August 2026.

The biggest moves are new names. Nobody searched for Claude Cowork a year ago; in August, 368k people did. OpenClaw went from 90 to 450k, and Hermes Agent from 30 to 823k.

The characters are the quiet giant. Character.AI and Janitor AI are searched more than any agent outside the big chat apps, and they almost never act on anything. Counting them as agents would make agents look more used than they are.

What runs through a shared router

Tokens measure work: every page an agent reads and every line it writes is counted. OpenRouter is the one router that publishes them by app. Of the 231.3T tokens its top 100 apps sent in the 30 days to 13 October, apps tagged as coding sent 193.9T. An app can carry several tags, so the groups overlap: Hermes Agent, the largest, is tagged both coding and personal agent. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Cowork run on their makers' own models and never pass through it.

Where they use it, and why there

The same model behaves like a different product depending on where it runs, because each place gives it different things to reach and a different person asking. Eight places, who is there, and the evidence.

WhereWho is thereWhy thereEvidence
Phone appEveryoneIt is always with them, so it gets the personal questions: health, money, what to do nextIn 37.5 million Copilot conversations, health was the top topic on phones at every hour of the day (Microsoft, 2025). Over 70% of ChatGPT's consumer messages were not about work by June 2025 (OpenAI).
VoiceEveryone, hands busyFaster than typing while driving, cooking or walking63% of Gemini users talk to it by voice (Google, August 2026). Alexa+ searches nearly doubled in a year.
Messages: iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SlackTinkerers; everyone inside WhatsAppNo new app to open; the agent runs all the time and texts back when a job is doneOpenClaw connects one agent to two dozen chat apps; Poke needs only a phone number. Meta counts anyone who used Meta AI inside WhatsApp in its billion.
BrowserEveryone doing errands; office workersMost forms, bookings and orders still live on websites without an APIThe agent moved into the browser people already have: Claude in Chrome searches rose from 590 to 135k a month while Comet fell from 246k to 41k, and OpenAI shut Atlas on 9 August.
Desktop appOffice workersThe files, the spreadsheets and the logged-in apps are on the computerOn desktops, work and career led Copilot's topics from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Microsoft). Anthropic shipped Cowork in Claude Desktop in April; OpenAI put ChatGPT Work in its desktop app in August.
Terminal and editorDevelopersThe code, the tests and the git history are there, and the agent can run them29.8% of the newest public pull requests on GitHub carry Claude Code's mark (amplifying.ai, October 2026). Anthropic sees coding moving from the chat app into automated API workflows (Economic Index, March 2026).
Inside company systemsOffice workers; businessesThe tickets, the CRM and the wiki are behind the company's loginCopilot Studio searches up 50% in a year; Microsoft now gives every new Copilot Studio agent its own identity in its directory, so agents are managed like staff.
The phone line and the support chatBusinesses, for their customersEvery call answered at 3 a.m., at a fraction of a person's costVapi is searched 550k times a month and Retell AI 74k, up half in a year; these agents work under the business's name, not their own.

Phone for life, desktop for work

Microsoft read 37.5 million Copilot conversations from January to September 2025 and found two products in one. On the phone, health was the top subject at every hour of every month, and people asked for advice as much as for facts. On the desktop, work and career moved ahead of technology from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Late at night, philosophy and religion came up more often.

Google's figure points the same way: 63% of Gemini's users talk to it rather than type. The phone agent is a companion that is always there; the desktop agent is a colleague with access to the files.

The labs folded their agents into the desktop

In 2025 the big labs shipped agents as separate products: OpenAI's Operator, then agent mode and the Atlas browser; Anthropic's computer use; Google's Project Mariner. In 2026 they pulled them back into one desktop app each.

Anthropic made Cowork, an agent that works in your files and apps, generally available in the Claude desktop app on 9 April, for paying subscribers on macOS and Windows. OpenAI shut the Atlas browser on 9 August and moved agent mode into ChatGPT Work, an agent for documents, spreadsheets and slides inside the ChatGPT desktop app, beside Codex. Searches followed: "ChatGPT agent" fell from 50k a month to 15k, and "Claude Cowork" rose from nothing to 368k.

The browser agent did not go away; it became a feature of the browser people already have. Claude in Chrome rose from 590 searches a month to 135k while the stand-alone AI browsers shrank around it.

Agents you text

The new place of 2026 is your messages. An agent runs all the time on a computer you own or a server someone rents you, and you talk to it in WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, Slack or Signal: book this, remind me of that, check the deploy, answer the email. It texts back when it is done.

OpenClaw, started in November 2025 by Peter Steinberger under the name Clawdbot, is open source, connects any model to two dozen chat apps, and is now the most-starred agent on GitHub, at 391,934. Hermes Agent, from Nous Research, does the same from the terminal and sends more tokens through OpenRouter than any other app. Poke is the hosted version for people who will not run a server: you text a number. For now this is the tinkerers' place. For everyone else, the agent in their messages is Meta AI inside WhatsApp.

Part 3

How: the tools they plug in

An agent is only as useful as what it can reach. Since late 2024 the common plug has been the Model Context Protocol (MCP): a tool written once as an MCP server works in Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Cursor and the open agents alike. ChatGPT's apps are built on it.

Its building blocks are installed at a scale few libraries reach. The TypeScript SDK was downloaded 65M times in the week to 13 October, 6.1× its first week of January, and the Python one 61M times. The official MCP Registry lists 43,275 servers: 27,666 can be reached over the internet and 17,182 are installed and run locally (2,075 offer both). Nearly two in three are hosted.

Which tools: the ones you can count

An MCP server that runs on your own machine is usually installed from npm, and npm publishes its downloads. That makes the developer's tools the only ones anyone can count. Weekly downloads, grouped by what the agent does with them:

The most-installed tool is a browser. Playwright's server was downloaded 6.4M times last week, 6.9× its January level, and Chrome DevTools' rose 12×. An agent that writes a web page wants to open it and look, the same way a person checks their work. Second is reading: Context7 hands the agent the current documentation for a library, so it stops writing code against last year's version.

mcp-remote is the bridge a local agent uses to reach a server hosted somewhere else, and its 6.7× rise is a sign of where tools are going: off the laptop and onto the vendor's servers, where Notion, Linear, Stripe and the rest now host their own. Those hosted servers are not on npm, so this chart sees less of them every month.

Who plugs in what

Each group reaches its tools a different way, and only the first leaves public counts. The rest switch on connectors inside an app, and the app keeps the numbers.

Before you quote a number

  • A user of the app is not a user of the agent. No company that reports a billion users says how many of them let the agent act.
  • The usage studies are a year old. OpenAI's covers consumer ChatGPT to June 2025, Microsoft's Copilot to September 2025. Both came before the desktop agents shipped.
  • Searches measure curiosity. A new product is searched while people find out what it is; a familiar one is opened without searching.
  • Downloads are not people. A build server reinstalls a package on every run, and npm sees only the tools that run locally, which are mostly developers'.
  • There is no city-level view. Agents run in data centres, not where the person who started them is. The closest public figures are by country: in India, Google's Antigravity is used by 15% of developers, level with Cursor.
  • These were read once. Every figure is as published on 14 October 2026, and this map changed twice in August alone.

A map that keeps itself current

A landscape like this goes stale the month it is drawn. A hedwigAI workbook re-reads its sources on the schedule you set, keeps each source beside its number, and asks you before it adds a row or changes what a column means.
