Agent tool usage · week to 21 October 2026

Which tools do AI agents use, by marketplace calls, SDK downloads and MCP installs?

No single source answers this question. We compared four public sources for the week to 21 October 2026: calls on the Monid marketplace, MCP server uses on Smithery, and SDK downloads on npm and PyPI. Every table is in the workbook behind this post.

What the sources show, in six lines:

  1. Web search and social media take 76% of Monid calls. One provider takes most of each: TinyFish in search and TikHub in social.
  2. 75% of Monid calls are free. Agents made 5.78M calls through Monid in the week. Only 1.42M of them were paid.
  3. A few accounts make most of the calls. Endpoints that average 100 or more calls per account each week carry 84% of the volume.
  4. The largest weekly swings come from small providers. Providers with under 5K calls changed by a median of +101% in a week. The largest providers changed by +28%.
  5. The sources rank providers differently. On Monid, TinyFish has 25 times the calls of Firecrawl. On PyPI, Firecrawl has more than 100 times the downloads of TinyFish.
  6. Tavily and Brave Search do not appear on Monid. Tavily has 1.71M PyPI downloads a week. Brave Search has 119K uses on Smithery, the most of any server we found.

The data

Four public sources and what each counts

Each source counts something different. Monid counts calls. Smithery counts uses of MCP servers. npm and PyPI count downloads of code. None of them counts everything.

1 · Ranking

Top 12 providers by Monid calls

These twelve providers have the most calls on Monid in the week. The bar shows calls. The next columns show how many accounts called each provider and how its calls changed from the week before.

TinyFish has 44% more calls than TikHub, the second provider. It also has the widest reach, with 368 accounts. Among these twelve, Apollo, Hunter and Context.dev come next by reach, with 280 to 329 accounts each. They rank lower by calls. All 45 providers are in the workbook.

2 · Categories

Monid calls by category and provider

Monid files every endpoint under a category. Adding up the calls shows what agents use tools for. Each bar is one category. Its length is the category’s share of all calls. Its segments are the providers that take those calls.

3 · Paid and free

Paid and free calls on Monid

7 days5.78M calls
paid 24.6%free 75.4%
30 days21.0M calls
paid 21.2%free 78.8%

Monid ranks providers by paid calls plus one fifth of free calls. In the week that total was 2.29M. This weighting is a choice about what to rank. It is not a measurement. Under it, a provider’s place depends on its mix of free and paid calls as much as on its volume.

All calls grew 22.3% in a week, from 4.73M to 5.78M.

A thousand calls a week from one account is a pipeline, not a person. It may be a scheduled job, a crawler or a batch. Such use is real. It is also concentrated, and it can appear or vanish with one customer.

Monid counts accounts for each endpoint. It does not say whether an account that calls two endpoints is counted once or twice. A provider’s reach here is therefore at least the count of its largest endpoint.

5 · Patterns

Reach and intensity across all 327 endpoints

Each dot is one Monid endpoint. Further right means more accounts call it. Higher means each account calls it more often. Both scales are logarithmic, so each step is ten times the last.

Vertical axis: calls per account in the week

Most endpoints are small. 89% of them have fewer than 100 accounts. The eight endpoints that reach 280 accounts or more are general tools: web search and page fetch, scraping, people and email lookup, and file tools. Social data is different. It has 155 endpoints, almost half of all, and none reaches more than 241 accounts. Each social endpoint is called harder: a median of 77 calls per account, against 35 for search, scraping and lead gen.

Monid is the most concentrated. Its ten largest providers take 94% of all calls. Smithery is far more spread out. Its ten most-used servers take 46% of the uses we found. Most of Smithery is quiet: 1,091 of the 1,498 servers we found have no recorded use.

7 · Change

Calls to two Litescrape App Store endpoints rose 44-fold and 57-fold. These calls came from only 20 and 28 accounts respectively. Apollo’s near-tripling came from 329 accounts. That is broad adoption, and it is the more meaningful signal.

The pictures are almost opposite. TinyFish leads Monid by a wide margin and barely appears in downloads. Firecrawl, Exa and Tavily lead downloads and sit low on Monid or are not listed. Neither picture is wrong. Monid shows what agents buy through a marketplace. Downloads show what developers add to their own code.

Downloads have flaws too. They count automated test and build runs. They do not count people. A package name can also belong to someone else. On npm, @apollo/client has 3.2M downloads a week. It is the Apollo GraphQL client and has nothing to do with Apollo.io.

MCP servers by use on Smithery

We searched Smithery for 36 kinds of tool and merged the results by server. Smithery verifies who publishes some servers. The chart shows the twelve most-used verified servers.

Google BigQuery

Google Compute Engine

Search leads here too: Brave Search and Paper Search are first and second, and Exa is eighth. The rest are office tools (Gmail, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, Slack and Google Drive), research data (PubMed) and developer tools (Google BigQuery, Google Compute Engine and GitHub).

This mix differs from Monid’s. On Monid, agents buy search, social media data and sales leads. On Smithery, people connect search, email, documents and research data. Marketplace calls lean towards collecting data in bulk. MCP servers lean towards everyday work.

Some unverified servers report high counts too. Web Scout, for example, reports 19.6K uses. We leave them out of the chart because their counts cannot be checked.

Which tools do agents pay for through a marketplace?MonidCalls made straight to a provider, without Monid
Which tools do developers add to their code?npm and PyPIWhether the code ever calls the tool. Automated builds also count as downloads.

For any ranking of this kind, read accounts before calls. Read raw figures beside ranked ones. Read every percentage next to the count it started from.

Method

How the data was collected

Everything here came through the shell that your agent gets from hedwigai, on 23 October 2026. Each answer names its source. Each measurement is also kept, so the same commands next week give a trend through series read. The full tables are in the workbook behind this post.

$ agentrank monid providers --limit 50
$ agentrank monid endpoints --limit 400
$ agentrank smithery "web search" --limit 50 # one of 36 searches
$ registry pypi tavily-python --history true
$ registry npm exa-js --history true

$ series read tinyfish --metric calls \
    | jq -c '.[] | [.labels.window, .labels.endpoint, .points[-1].v]'
["30d",null,2789537.0]
["7d",null,763418.0]
["7d","fetch",203332.0]
["7d","search",560086.0]

Limits. This is one week and one snapshot. Monid does not document its account field. We read it as the number of distinct accounts that called each endpoint. Smithery’s search is fuzzy, and Smithery defines its use count itself. Our Smithery list covers the servers that 36 searches returned, not every server. None of these figures is a market share.

Add hedwigai to your MCP client from mcp.hedwigai.com, or sign in with a work email. Turn the programs on with programs enable agentrank and programs enable registry, then ask your agent what a tool is really used for.
