Which MCP servers, connectors and skills each community uses

An agent is only as useful as what it can reach. Developers, designers, marketers, researchers and people running an agent for their own life each plug in different tools: MCP servers, the connectors in Claude and ChatGPT, and skills that teach the agent a job.

No maker publishes how many people use its server, so we counted what is public for eleven communities: downloads, plugin and skill installs, and how often people search Google for each tool’s MCP server. The counts measure different things and are not comparable across tables. Within a community, they show what is picked. Across communities, the searches show who is arriving: marketers, creators and people connecting their homes and messages.

This follows the AI agent landscape, which mapped who uses which agents and where.

Two directories, two crowds

The two big chat apps’ directories show who each is for. ChatGPT’s largest app categories are travel, finance and shopping, things people do for themselves. Claude’s own ranking of its connectors is all work: documents, mail, calendar and design.

What Anthropic connects each department to

Anthropic publishes a plugin for each department, and each plugin lists the connectors it sets up. That is the maker’s view of what each team needs. Most also connect Slack, Gmail and Google Calendar; below is what each adds.

Each community has two views. The chart shows Google searches a month for each tool’s MCP server, in January and August 2026, on one scale for every chart. The table shows the largest public adoption counts.

Developers

The biggest numbers anywhere. Developers give their agent a browser to drive, the docs of the library in front of them and their code host. Searches for the leaders fell this year, but their downloads are still the largest of any tools here.

Designers

Figma leads designers' searches, but the most-installed design tool is a skill, not a server: Anthropic's frontend-design, which tells an agent how to make an interface look designed. Canva, Excalidraw and Framer more than doubled their searches.

Data and analytics

Analysts connect the warehouse and the product analytics tool, and ask in words. PostHog's server is the most downloaded in the group. Power BI and PostHog searches rose this year; Postgres and BigQuery fell.

Marketers and SEO

The fastest-growing community. Searches for ad-platform servers went from almost nothing to 12,100 a month each: Meta Ads up 17 times since January, Google Ads 5 times, Search Console 4. On skills.sh, marketers install one bundle, coreyhaines31/marketingskills, whose SEO audit and copywriting skills are each past 220,000 installs.

Sales and go-to-market

Sales teams reach for the CRM first and workflow tools second. Their installs run an order of magnitude below marketing's, and most of what they use is skills for writing outreach rather than servers. The prospecting data vendors' own plugins have barely started.

Finance

Two crowds. Builders take payments: Stripe has both a plugin and a skill in the tens of thousands. Accountants and analysts are earlier: Xero searches quadrupled from a low base and QuickBooks' more than doubled, and Anthropic's financial-services plugins, which connect FactSet, S&P Global, PitchBook, Morningstar and LSEG, have 39,821 GitHub stars. Finance and trading is also the second-largest category in ChatGPT's app directory, with 136 apps.

Researchers and students

Researchers and students give their agent papers: PDFs to read, arXiv and Semantic Scholar to search, Zotero for their library. Overleaf searches quintupled as people started writing papers with an agent beside the editor. ChatGPT's directory has only 18 research apps, against 149 for travel.

Office workers

Everyone else at work connects the same handful: their mail, calendar, documents and chat. Claude's own ranking of its connectors starts Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Canva, Microsoft 365, Notion. Anthropic's own HR and enterprise-search plugins connect nothing else.

Ops and IT

Operations teams connect the tracker, the monitoring and the cloud. Atlassian's is the most downloaded Python server on this page. Microsoft and Cloudflare publish skill sets for their clouds that are installed hundreds of thousands of times; Grafana and Cloudflare searches nearly doubled and tripled.

Creators

Video, 3D and sound. Blender's server is the single fastest-growing search on this page by volume, from 12,100 a month to 49,500, and Unity's more than doubled. The most-installed creator tools are skills for making video in code: HeyGen's HyperFrames and Remotion.

Everyday users and tinkerers

People running an agent for their own life, often one they text, like OpenClaw. They connect notes, home, messages and music. Every search here rose; Home Assistant and WhatsApp nearly tripled. On ClawHub, OpenClaw's skill registry, the most-installed skill is one that lets the agent improve itself.

Where the evidence is thin

Healthcare, biotech and legal barely show up in public counts. Searches for Benchling, FHIR and Epic servers are about a hundred a month or fewer. The best-downloaded biomedical server, BioMCP, has 3,753 downloads a week, and Anthropic’s life-sciences plugins have 621 GitHub stars. These are fields where agents run inside companies on licensed data, so the public numbers likely understate them.

Hosted servers are invisible to downloads. Stripe, Linear, Atlassian, Notion, Figma and HubSpot each run a remote server you connect to by URL, and no package count sees those.

No vendor publishes usage. We looked for any figure from a maker on how many people use its MCP server, connector or ChatGPT app and found only launch announcements.

Our own skills

Each answers from public records, with a source cited for every claim.

  • Everything was read on 14 October 2026. Searches: Google Ads search volumes for “<tool> mcp”, worldwide, via DataForSEO; January and August 2026.
  • Downloads: npm’s last-week counts and pypistats.org. They include CI runs and mirrors.
  • Installs: Claude’s plugin marketplace, skills.sh (all time) and ClawHub. A skill installed as part of a bundle is counted once for each skill, so we quote a bundle’s top skill and never add them up.
  • Directories: Claude’s connectors; ChatGPT’s app directory by category from a community mirror of 1,624 apps dated 2 July 2026, since the directory itself does not load without signing in.
  • Department connectors: the .mcp.json of each plugin in anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins, financial-services and life-sciences.
  • Left out: Smithery’s use counts for third-party listings, which pay-per-call listings top; AI image and video skill bundles copied under many owners with identical counts; and the install counts of Claude’s department plugins, which all read zero.
